Memhir Akale Wold, born in 1824 in Gedem Fara, Ethiopia, was a scholar of extraordinary intellect and humility. Renowned for his expertise in poetry, religious philosophy, and scripture interpretation, he resolved conflicts between Christians and Muslims during Emperor Tewodros II’s reign. His wisdom, compared to biblical figures like Job and Abraham, earned him deep admiration from Tewodros, who saw him as a symbol of unity and knowledge. Akale Wold’s humility and God-fearing nature distinguished him from others. Later, he served King Menelik II as governor, leaving a legacy of peace, scholarship, and integrity that continues to inspire Ethiopian history.
Founded in 1959, Memhir Akalewold Secondary School is a public, coeducational, nonreligious school located in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. It began with 24 teachers, 15 staff, and 89 students, guided by the values of knowledge, unity, and dedication inspired by Memhir Akale Wold. Today, it serves low-income families in a non-boarding setting and remains committed to academic excellence. With an acceptance rate below 5%, it is among the most selective schools nationally. The school is known for producing resilient, high-achieving learners who strive to improve their communities. It continues to be a vital force for education and opportunity in a difficult region.
