On April 10, 2025, students from grades 10 to 12 of Memhir Akalewold Secondary School, including students with special needs, visited the Smart City Project organized by the Dessie City Administration. The students were accompanied by their ICT teachers and school staff
The visit was facilitated by Mr. Nathanael, an ICT expert working with the city administration. He gave an overview of the Smart City initiative, explaining both its goals and the progress made so far. The session included both theory and practical demonstrations, helping students understand how technology is being used to improve city life
The students were introduced to systems like digital surveillance cameras, public Wi-Fi services, traffic monitoring tools, and other innovations aimed at making Dessie more efficient and connected. They also had a chance to ask questions and explore how these changes might benefit the community in the futur
This visit served not only as a learning opportunity but also as a way to encourage digital curiosity among young learners. It was especially meaningful for students with special needs, who were fully included in the experience and actively engaged in the sessions.
Teachers and staff from Akale Wold Secondary School expressed their gratitude to the city administration and Mr. Nathanael for hosting the students and making the information accessible and inspiring. The school hopes to continue organizing similar educational trips that blend classroom learning with real-world exposure to technology and innovation.
“Our goal is to ensure that all our students, regardless of their age or background, have the chance to see how technology is shaping the world around them,” said Melaku Worede, ICT teacher of Grade 10.
