In a remarkable display of corporate social responsibility, Safaricom Ethiopia has donated 20 modern desktop computers, four high-speed routers, and six months of free internet connectivity, with a total estimated value of 1.3 million Ethiopian Birr, to two schools in Dessie City: Memhir Akalewold Secondary School and Hote Secondary School.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mr. Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, emphasized that this donation reflects the company’s strong commitment to contributing meaningfully to the communities in which it operates. “As a digital company, we recognize the importance of bridging the digital divide in Ethiopia. By providing access to computers and internet service, we are enabling students to participate in the global digital economy and improve their academic performance,” he said.
He explained that access to digital tools is essential for educational equity and technological advancement, especially in today’s increasingly interconnected world. Mr. Vanhelleputte also reaffirmed the company’s ongoing dedication to supporting the development goals of the Dessie City Administration. “We operate across Ethiopia by distributing our SIM cards and services through our agents and retail partners. Beyond business, we believe in giving back. We will continue strengthening our partnerships with local governments and communities to support initiatives that drive progress,” he added.
Also present at the event, Mr. Fikir Abebe, Head of the Education Bureau of Dessie City Administration, expressed sincere gratitude for the generous support. He noted that this donation will play a vital role in modernizing the learning environment and enhancing the overall quality of education within the schools. “This assistance is not just about equipment—it is about creating opportunities. With online exams becoming more prevalent, especially for Grade 12 students, having access to digital resources will help level the playing field. It will also improve the efficiency of teaching, boost students’ confidence, and prepare them for future academic and career challenges,” he said.
Mr. Samuel Molalign, Deputy Mayor of Dessie City Administration, also thanked Safaricom Ethiopia for the valuable contribution. He highlighted how such partnerships between the private sector and local government can have a long-lasting impact on the community. “This generous support is a powerful step forward in our efforts to build a digitally literate generation. I encourage Safaricom Ethiopia to continue expanding its corporate social responsibility initiatives by supporting more educational programs, urban infrastructure development, and job creation for unemployed youth in the city,” Mr. Samuel stated.
The donation marks a significant milestone in promoting digital inclusion in Dessie, where many students still face barriers to accessing modern technology. With the continued support of corporate partners like Safaricom Ethiopia, the city hopes to further improve its educational system and ensure that no student is left behind in the digital era.
